I’ve seen several exam prep books and the ARRL book is by far the best, if you want to actually learn the material as opposed to memorizing the correct answers. This book has the entire question pool in the back for reference and practice. Each section is outlined in the beginning with the relevant questions from the question pool up front, so you can see the questions and correct answers. Then, full detailed explanations and examples follow, which actually illustrate the content. All of the relevant background information is included.Most other books I have seen only explain the correct answers without actually explaining the detail and background info on how to arrive at the correct answers.For the extra exam, this is more important than previous exams because of the questions on sections such as electrical principles, components, radio circuits, measurements and more. The previous two license class exams had more content that is simple memorization (rules, regulations, basic principles).Unless you have the background knowledge on these subjects already, this book will actually help you learn the content AND pass the exam.

The only dislike is that this is very difficult subject matter for me. I sailed through Technician and General, but this is different.

Similar to previous license manuals, this book covers just enough information to help you pass the exam. It doesn’t go deep into the topics but gives references to additional materials for further reading. As other reviews mentioned, this edition contains a few obvious typos here and there — nothing serious but this book would’ve benefited from extra proof reading before being published.

The book arrived within 48 hours after my order as part of a larger order. This is not my first version/edition of this book. For me, the ARRL study guides are a “Goldilocks” mix of just the right amount of theory and background information. Other publisher’s books either have you just memorize the answers to the questions and you actually learn little to nothing or focus on comprehensive theory and discussion and kill your interest. YMMV, but the ARRL guides and sample tests have worked for me before and I anticipate similar results from this manual.

I would definitely buy this publication again from the American radio relay league. It is one of the better ways to prep for the extra exam.
