Helps a lot around the homestead

Once put together it works well. Strong build quality and I've used it help dig much bigger holes than the bore. Great value for the price.

Cheap, Great, and Slightly Hazardous

Short version: Just buy this thing. It's worth every penny.Long version: I had a bit over 400' of fence to build and 70 fence post holes to dig. Now you're likely thinking: "DIY'ing 400 feet of fence, you're nuts!!" But hear me out: it's saving me $15,000 in labor. I'll dig for *months* to save $15,000, well as it turns out because of this auger i didn't have to dig for months! So I go to my hardware store to rent an auger. They want $400 for the weekend. I walk out, and go to Amazon. I find this auger for $170. After reading the reviews, I figure well, even if it burns up I could buy a second one and still be ahead versus renting something for $400, and in the end I own the thing. So I pull the trigger and buy it.Upsides: This thing rocks. I got the optional 10" bit for another $50 and we got digging. This thing is a beast, and it chewed through our tough NorCal valley packed hardpan with voracity. It seriously kicks butt. Now the downsides: the trigger is all or nothing and if you gun it this thing will take you for a ride if you hit a rock or a root. After about 20 holes we figured out the trick is to just keep firing the trigger rapidly to slow it down and give it a breather if it does hit something solid. The other downside is the left handle grip has this rather useless flare out that I suppose is there to help you hold it, but practically all it does is murder the top of your left hand if this thing does get away from you.All that aside, if you're careful and take it slow this thing will blow away all expectations.

Perfect for fence posts!

This is, so far, a really great product! It's compact and fairly lightweight ( heavy enough that you don't really need to push to get the hole started) with surprising power! I've drilled dozens of holes of varying depths for fence post and for planting small trees. It cuts through small tree roots with no issues. The best part is No Gas to mess with! Just plug it in and go!The only drawbacks I've encountered are:1. You must be very mindful of where the cord is running (this is common sense) but you need to be aware at all times. I tend to put the cord over my shoulder and let it trail behind me.2. There is NO safety stop unless you completely let go! And even then it takes a turn or two to come to a complete stop. So hitting a rock or larger tree root could potentially take you for a ride if you're not paying attention! It doesn't take long to get a feel for what the bit is up against (rocks and roots etc.) and I found that a light grip, just enough to squeeze the trigger and pull the unit up if needed, will save possible sprained wrists.Overall it's a great unit and exactly what I needed. I would absolutely buy another if this one ever quits.

Good on ground soft

It does job and has lot of torque. Its lighter (and quieter, no fumes in face) than petrol versions and worked well in sandy soil. I connected mine to a 3kw portable generator The Lack of the ability to reverse direction is a serious flaw given it will get stuck on roots or rocks. The torque is strong enough to cause injury if not careful.UPDATE. After cutting 60+ holes for paddock my opinion has improved. If dig in stages and remove the soil as you go , it is far less likely to bind. If you feel an obstruction stop and clear it or cut root . It will get caught by roots and so you will need a method to pull free. Once set up, its quick to dig a run of post holes. .

Dig 8 inch post holes 29 inches deep fast

Solid construction powerful auger was a surprise for the price. Digging down 8 inch wide holes 29 inches deep was fast and easy. However incorrect use of any auger can result in a fractured wrist, hand or arm if it catches on a rock, root, or hard gravel and you don't release the power switch fast enough and let go of the auger. You have to know what type of soil you are augering into. You want to maintain a firm grip on the device but at the same time make sure you are able to release it quickly in case it grabs onto something and starts twisting. If it starts twisting and you don't let go fast enough it can twist your arm right off because it has lots of power. Let the auger go down a couple of inches then pull it up and let it push the material away from the hole. Don't try to dig the hole all in one motion you got to do it in steps. In soft soil you can dig a hole in under a minute. In gravel or clay it might take you a couple of minutes to dig a hole going a little bit at a time. In packed gravel it can be slow going as you may need to break up the rock with a demolition pick then augur it out. Powerful electric motor. Advantage of electric motors over gasoline engines is that an electric motor always starts and requires no maintenance. Will be taking this up to Virginia to auger 40 post holes for my son's pig farm. This will make it quick and easy. The auger bit comes off with a simple cotter pin so it will fit in the trunk of a small car.

Works as expected

Works exactly like you hope it would. The shaft that comes with it will do roughly 25 inches, maybe a little more if you can scrape away the area around the hole. This company also sells extensions which is something you should consider if you have more than, say, ten holes. I say that because you are essentially deadlifting this thing the whole time and it will wear your lower back out after a while if you are doing all the holes yourself. Keep a cordless reciprocal saw and some form of shears handy for any roots you encounter. My suggestion is to keep a firm, but tentative hold on the handles because if you hit any big roots, this thing will spin! Make sure not to tie a knot in your electrical cord for safety because you want this thing to power off if it twists. The cord length is a little short as well so make sure you have an extension cord with you. You should also have some ear protection as the motor will whine loud enough to not bother you once or twice, but a dozen times will damage your ears. Besides that, this thing is a beast and will save you a ton of digging.
