Bottomless portafilters easily show these issues up as the resulting shot may not pour as expected. An example might be using a bottomless portafilter on a machine with a 15 bar grouphead pressure and dry shop bought vacuum packeted coffee. This will almost certainly result in a 'splatter' effect and not the perfect shot we all aspire to.
