It’s motivating
They changed the software so that, if you don’t pay, you get little info. Still, I wouldn’t be without it

Get a Fitbit
Just brilliant - I love that it is fully in sync with my phone so even if my phone is on silent and I get a call, my Fitbit lets me know by vibrating and on screen telling me who is calling. Good to see sleep details and cardio load and my daily step count with my bpm! What’s not to love!

Great fitness trainer, bad watch
I've had my Fitbit for over a month now. These are my findings.Firstly, this is great for fitness coaching - it really gets a lot right. It takes something as simple as counting steps and heart rate, but adds in (optional) reminders to get you to move more, or work harder. In the last month I've increased my steps, and spent more time in the cardio zone. There's a long way to go, but I can see it's making a difference, which I'm really happy about.Mine came with a year's free Premium subscription. This is optional - the difference I've seen has been just from walking more or faster. However, it includes access to loads of fitness videos for all kinds of exercise (yoga, walking, running, dance, mindfulness) so as my fitness improves, I plan to use these too. If you can't afford a gym membership - and AS LONG AS you have the motivation to use them consistently, it's a good all-round gym alternative... not to mention much cheaper. For such a small gadget, it tracks an incredible amount of data. To get the most from this, you need to wear the watch continuously, i.e., to see your sleep stats and overall wellness score (useful for knowing which days to push yourself harder or rest up). You'll also need to be prepared to install and use the phone app to access some of the additional data. I find the sleep score to be interesting but, like other fitness metrics, it's only really useful if you ACT ON the data. I know I could have a better sleep routine (and the premium subscription includes a training plan for it!) but I've yet to do it.There are a couple of fails. As someone used to wearing a watch, it's sad that I can't just see the time by looking at my wrist anymore! The screen turns off when not in active use to extend battery life - it's good thinking, but you'll need to either flick your wrist or tap the screen to see what's on it. Neither of these work consistently. In particular, after just a month, a wrist-flick often isn't sensitive enough to activate my screen.More detrimental is that the screen is really hard to view in sunlight (i.e., outdoors). This is a real pain when you're out walking, as you can't easily see messages and notifications (or even heart rate and steps)The watch has various screens that show missed calls and messages (if you've turned on access to your phone), plus stopwatch / timer, plus lots of the bio tracking data mentioned above. It's a design flaw in my opinion to include a screen with your weight! If you add this when you first set up your device, it's there permanently. It's not always on show, but it's not a healthy reminder, especially if you have ED issues.Overall, this is a good investment at the £40-mark (on sale) if you're looking for a simple intro to fitness tracking. I've turned off the flashy distractions (i.e., texts and calls), also as I'm a bit unsure about bluetooth and data security. Even without the bells and whistles, this is an unobtrusive, motivating bit of kit. It's really down to you whether it makes you fitter, more flexible or better rested - it's not a magic bullet! - but it gives you many of the tools to get you there.
