Q: Any know if they hold up or not...worried that they actually show a defective one in their advertising pic?

I have had mine for nearly two years. I use it to hand cut dovetails. Still looks great, so I would say it is holding up well.

I checked their website and they don't publish where the products are manufactured or any useful information about their company. Beware that some items sold in Amazon are made in China but have German sounding names to draw customers, doesn't mean it's made in Germany. I can't find country of origin, "Wood is Good" brand that is made in the USA for just a few dollars more if you are looking for known USA products. I personally ended up buying the Wood is Good one because I couldn't locate anything on origin of manufacture of Schaaf tools.

Q: Could this mallet be used with a froe, to split shingles? I’m wondering if its sturdy and large enough

I think so. The material around the head should protect the mallet and it is heavy enough that I would think it would work. I have not split shingles but I do carve wood and it is heavy enough to split off wood using a chisel.

Q: I've only ever used a wooden mallet. How does this compare with the urethane head?

I like the urethane head better than a wooden head. The urethane head doesn’t “jump around” (move out of place) on the head of my chisel as much as a wooden mallet would. The beveled head takes a few minutes to get used to, but after that it’s the way to go. This is a solid, well-made mallet. Highly recommend.
